The 2027 CPT® code update introduces significant changes that will impact medical coding, billing, documentation, and reimbursement across multiple healthcare specialties. Effective January 1, 2027, the updated CPT code set includes 453 editorial changes, consisting of 299 new codes, 74 revised codes, and 80 deleted codes. These changes reflect advancements in medical technology, evolving clinical practices, and the need for more accurate and detailed reporting of healthcare services.
This year's updates go beyond routine annual code revisions, introducing major changes to several coding areas. One of the most significant developments is the restructuring of maternity care services, replacing traditional global maternity care reporting with separate reporting for antepartum care, labor management, delivery, and postpartum services. Other important changes include new codes for ventricular assist device procedures, expanded diaphragmatic hernia repair reporting, revised prostate biopsy guidelines, new unattended sleep study codes, and updated biofeedback reporting requirements.
The 2027 CPT update also expands reporting for artificial intelligence-related services, introducing 10 additional AI-related codes and updating Appendix S, the Taxonomy for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Services and Procedures. Significant changes are also being introduced in speech-language pathology, adaptive behavior services, cardiovascular procedures, radiology, genetic testing, and other specialty-specific areas.
This webinar will provide a practical review of the most important 2027 CPT code additions, deletions, revisions, and guideline changes. Participants will learn how these updates affect code selection, clinical documentation, time-based reporting, claim submission, and reimbursement. The session will also address coding challenges, common reporting mistakes, and the transition from deleted codes to the appropriate updated code structures.
Attendees will gain practical guidance for preparing their coding and billing workflows for the new year, updating internal coding references, educating providers and coding teams, and reducing claim denials and compliance risks.
Whether you work in professional fee coding, hospital outpatient services, surgical billing, specialty practice administration, or revenue cycle management, this session will help you understand the changes and prepare for accurate CPT reporting in 2027.
Identify the major changes in the 2027 CPT code set, including the 299 new codes, 74 revised codes, 80 deleted codes, and the clinical specialties most affected. Explain the purpose and application of newly introduced CPT codes and recognize how revised code descriptions, reporting instructions, and coding guidelines affect code assignment. Understand the significant restructuring of maternity care services, including the transition from global maternity codes to separate reporting for antepartum care, labor management, delivery, and postpartum services. Evaluate new and revised surgical and cardiovascular procedure codes, including updates affecting ventricular assist devices, diaphragmatic hernia repair, tricuspid valve procedures, and other surgical services. Apply updated coding requirements for radiology and urology services, including prostate biopsy reporting, magnetic resonance angiography, and new imaging-related procedures. Understand the new unattended sleep testing code structure and biofeedback reporting requirements, including changes to complexity-based reporting, technical and professional components, and time-based services. Recognize the impact of new AI-related CPT codes and updated Appendix S guidelines on reporting assistive, augmentative, and other AI-related medical services. Identify changes affecting rehabilitation and specialty services, including speech-language pathology, adaptive behavior services, audiology, vestibular testing, and genetic testing. Evaluate the impact of new, revised, and deleted codes on documentation, billing workflows, reimbursement, and payer claim requirements. Develop an implementation strategy for the 2027 CPT changes, including codebook updates, EHR and charge master revisions, staff education, claim edit reviews, and audit preparation.
