Each year the AMA updates the CPT® manual for dates of service on January 1st. The changes include additions, revisions, and deletions of codes, guidelines, and parentheticals. In addition to the addition of E/M guideline changes for visits other than office and outpatient visits, there are changes to other parts of the manual that will be implemented on January 1, 2023. These include several changes to the surgery section as well as codes related to COVID and telehealth. There is also at least one new modifier being added related to telehealth. If the changes are not implemented for claims, practices run the risk of claim denials and improper payments. Practices should prepare for the changes so that they are prepared for the new year. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) also makes changes in the Physician’s Fee Schedule that need to be understood by physicians and their staff. This is essential in planning for the upcoming year with changes to reimbursement from not only Medicare but other insurance carriers that set reimbursement amounts utilizing RVUs.
